Inheritance tax calculator
Estimate the inheritance tax on your estate in a minute, and see how the bill changes when unused pensions are counted from 6 April 2027.

How the calculator works
It adds up the estate you enter, deducts the allowances you’re likely to have, and applies inheritance tax at 40% to the rest. It uses the rules for the 2026/27 tax year:
- A nil-rate band of £325,000 per person, doubled for married couples and civil partners on the second death, and reduced by any gifts made in the seven years before death.
- A residence nil-rate band of up to £175,000 per person if a home passes to children or grandchildren, limited to the value of the home and reduced by £1 for every £2 the estate is worth above £2 million.
- For deaths from 6 April 2027, unused pensions added to the estate, which also counts towards the £2 million taper.
What it leaves out
To keep it simple, it ignores business and agricultural relief, charitable gifts and the 36% rate, trusts, life cover in trust, debts you haven’t deducted, and the detail of how gifts and taper relief interact. For couples it assumes everything passed to the survivor on the first death and both sets of allowances are available.

Pensions and the 2027 change. Pensions left to a spouse or civil partner remain exempt, so for most couples the effect shows up on the second death. Death-in-service benefits are excluded altogether. Read our full guide.
