Financial planning for Ripon

Ripon is a cathedral city with a market-town pace, ringed by farmland and with Fountains Abbey just down the road. Many of the families we talk to here own land, a farm business or a stake in a local company, and for them the inheritance tax picture changed on 6 April 2026.

Agricultural and business property relief at 100% now covers the first £2.5 million of qualifying assets per person, with 50% relief above that. Unused allowance can pass to a surviving spouse or civil partner. That still protects a lot of family farms, but not all of them, and the way the farm, the house and the pensions are held now matters more than ever.

Planning for Ripon’s farming and business families

  • Succession, not just tax Who takes the farm on, when, and how the other children are treated fairly. We plan the money side alongside your solicitor and accountant so the three of us aren’t working in silos.
  • Making the most of both allowances Because the £2.5 million allowance is per person and now transferable between spouses, ownership and wills need a fresh look. Leaving everything to a spouse doesn’t use the 100% relief on the first death in the same way.
  • Pensions as part of the estate From 6 April 2027 most unused pensions count towards inheritance tax. For families who were relying on a SIPP to pass on wealth outside the estate, the order in which you spend your money needs rethinking.

I have enlisted the help of two leading members of Seventy Financial Planning over the past few years – Chris Riley and Andrew Brierley. Both have been fantastic and relaxed in their friendly Yorkshire manner! In fact all of the team at Seventy are great. Highly recommended.

Fionn

Seventy brought real clarity to my personal situation, highlighting areas that need attention and which were performing well. I appreciated the genuine desire to understand my personal situation. The unhurried and professional approach made Seventy a pleasure to work with.

Client from Yorkshire

My wife and I first contacted Chris at Seventy some 10 years ago. We were very impressed with him and the advice we were given, and have been ever since. It is good to know that our finances are being taken care of by such a competent adviser and I would recommend Chris’s services to anyone.

Roy

The team at Seventy Financial Planning have provided my wife and I with invaluable expert advice and support over a number of years. Their services are very professional and first class. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone seeking independent financial advice.

Steve Bullen

Seventy has been a real lifesaver for us. Our investments with a previous firm were rapidly depleting. This would have resulted in severe difficulties for us. Seventy stabilised and grew our investments. That this was achieved in the difficult markets we are seeing is impressive.

Yasir Khan

Chris from Seventy sat with me and assessed my needs and how risk averse I am. He then provided me with a full review of findings and investment options. I am now in a better financial position than I would have been without his advice and I have been able to take early retirement.

Ripon: your questions

How far is your office from Ripon?

Our Harrogate office at Haggs Farm, Follifoot is about 12 miles from Ripon in a straight line. Plenty of Ripon clients meet us there; others prefer video calls for most meetings.

Do you give tax advice on farm and business relief?

We plan how relief, pensions, gifts and investments fit together and model the outcome. The technical relief claim and valuations sit with your accountant and solicitor, and we work alongside them. The FCA does not regulate tax or estate planning.

Is the £2.5 million allowance fixed?

The government has said the allowance is fixed until 5 April 2031. After that it may change, which is one reason to review plans regularly.
